Introduction
Welcome to the New Kensington and Arnold Weed and Seed Web site. This site was designed to share the exciting community revitalization projects that have been completed and projects currently in the works to restore our neighborhood and improve the quality of life of the people who live here.
In 1991, the U.S. Department of Justice established Weed and Seed, which is a community-based multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and neighborhood restoration. This begins with law enforcement agencies, community policing and numerous social service agencies working to “weed out” criminals and criminal activity from a designated target area. It is then integrated with the “seeding” part of the program which brings prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood revitalization services to that area.
The New Kensington-Arnold area became a designated Pennsylvania Weed and Seed area in 2001. Since then, with the help of law enforcement and residents in the community, the program has had a huge success at driving criminals out of our area. Our crime rate has dropped over 25% and continues to do so. The downtown area is also beginning to prosper again with the addition of numerous businesses and a community college.
Mission & Vision Statement
Our mission is to enrich the quality of life in the community by creating and maintaining community partnerships that promote and improve public safety, economic development, education, infrastructure and enhanced community services.
The vision is to implement a multilevel plan that includes four basic components: law enforcement; community policing; prevention, intervention and treatment; and neighborhood restoration.
Please browse our site and read about all of the accomplishments that the program has already made and the improvements that are being planned for the near future. If you are a resident within the target area, a community leader, or if you represent an organization/business within our neighborhood, we encourage you to become involved in the New Kensington-Arnold Weed and Seed Initiative.
